COVID-19 pandemic greatly impacts international students in many education institutions in the United States in terms of their academic programs as well as daily social lives. In addition to their many difficulties and obstacles, such as cultural shock, the social isolation of being away from family and friends, being homesick, finding employment and balancing work, financial struggles, different spiritual beliefs, unfamiliar living settings, and food options, at the same time, international students encounter an enormous pressure to protect themselves to have a safe life and to adjust to mounting health crisis in their local cities.

Academic librarians can play a unique role in helping their international students overcome cultural, educational, and social challenges at this time. Providing some outreach Initiatives targeting international students in their institution, such as regular virtual coffee breaks, research consultations, and personal librarian programs, will help alleviate social isolation, enhance online studies, and improve mental health. Taking advantage of new technology can also come to the rescue. The tool Clio, which offers a guide to the local history and culture, helps the students learn about and connect with local history and museums. By staying socially and virtually close to them, academic librarians can better support them to cope with their difficulties in today’s challenges and fend off “overwhelming” negative information around them.

This presentation aims to open a window for academic librarians to think about improving library services in support of their international students during the COVID-19 pandemic. It provides librarians with effective practices for serving international students, contributing to their retention and success, and increasing campus diversity.
